This volume, prepared under the auspices of the Paleontological Society, answers the paleontologist's need for an up-to-date and comprehensive sourcebook of field and laboratory techniques. A collection of essays and two bibliographies make up the book. The essays contributed by more than 80 specialists, describe both classic and modern techniques and range from methods of fossil-collecting to the preparation of illustrations for publication. Most of them are here published for the first time. The bibliographies provide a guide to the world literature on paleontological techniques. There are 5 parts to the handbook: Part I. Procedures and techniques applicable to the major fossil groups. Part II. Techniques having broad applicability--collecting techniques, mechanical methods of p reparation, chemical methods of preparation, radiation and related techniques, casting and molding, and illustration. Part III. Specialized methods used in the new and expanding field of palynology. Part IV. Bibliography of literature on paleontological techniques, Part V. Compilation of bibliographies of use to paleontologists and stratigraphers. |
